World Changers: Day 1

World Changers have arrived in town, and there's painting to be done. So let's get to it.

At Burgard High School, loaded buses were pulling into the parking lot. Teenagers were spilling out, stretching their limbs after a long ride, and scrambling about finding their teams for the week. In the back, staff member bustled about a wagon loaded with carefully sorted paint buckets, making sure each team of volunteers would have the paint brushes, masks, scrubbers, gloves, and garbage bags they would need for the coming week.

This year we've lined up thirteen homes around the city. We'll be following along on the progress of three South Buffalo homes so you can see the difference made over the course of four days of work. That's right, just four days. Those volunteers have a busy week ahead.

It's an expensive endeavor to provide transportation, food, shelter, supervision, medical attention, construction supplies, etc. The costs are divided and, fittingly, NHS of South Buffalo is in charge of the paint and building materials. The project was also partially supported by the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo.

We also review the applications and assist with the selection of the properties to be worked on. While we want to make a big impact on the community and for the homeowner, it's also important to keep in mind what type of work these teenagers can handle, and what projects are just too big for the time available. You can see a few examples of selected homes below. Do you know somebody who would be interested in this project? Check out eligibility at on our website.

Note: The 2012 World Changers Buffalo project took place July 9-13. This mini-series was posted the following week. To read the World Changers blog posts on Buffalo, click here.
